God the Good Shepherd

If there is a God in the world, why are there so many unbelievers? Why are there so many lost sheep?

Matthew 18 says "What do you think? If a man owns a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go to look for the one that wandered off? 13 And if he finds it, I tell you the truth, he is happier about that one sheep than about the ninety-nine that did not wander off. 14 In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should be lost.:

If God is a good shepherd, who actively seeks out lost sheep, why are there so many lost sheep in the world?

Of course, a truly good shepherd says 'Sheep have minds of their own', 'I have left enough evidence for the sheep to find its own way back', or 'The sheep was never in my flock anyway', or 'That sheep was actually a goat'

I once heard William Lane Craig at a debate at Purdue University (if memory serves me well). He explained that Christianity, as a percentage of world population has steadily risen over time. Hence, there are more sheep. I guess in one sense the good shepherd is getting even better....assuming this is true....

I'm not sure that all those who claim Christianity are truly sheep.

So, is there even an answer to your question? On my account there would be no defense of the Shepherd, not defense of God. Does God need a defense?

or has God given the Sheep freewill? will he chase and show the road home or even carry the willing sheep home who has lost its way?

but will he override the will of the sheep that is determined not to rejoin the flock?

A good shepherd does not say 'I have given the sheep free will to find its own way home'.

It was Christians who chose the analogy of God as a shepherd, so they should try to make sense of their own metaphor....
