William Lane Craig - Master of Apologetics

William Lane Craig was on the Christian radio show Unbelievable where he was described as a master of apologetics

Craig Debate is an interesting take by William Lane Craig on the problem of suffering.

Craig said :-

'We can summarize this new version of the argument from harm as follows:

1. If God exists, gratuitous harm does not exist.
2. Gratuitous harm does exist.
3. Therefore, God does not exist.

Now the most contentious premiss in this argument is (2). The first version of the argument from harm posed an essentially internal problem about the consistency of Christian theism, since the Christian is committed by his own theology to the truth of the propositions God exists and Harm exists. But the Christian is not committed to the truth of (2). How, then, will the atheist prove that the harm in the world is truly gratuitous?'

An excellent point by a top Christian philosopher.

How is anybody going to prove that the harm caused by abortion is truly gratuitous?

Do 'masters of apologetics' really think there is no 'truly gratuitous' harm done in the world?

Craig digs himself in deeper....

'All right, but then that makes it all the more difficult for the atheist to prove that truly gratuitous harm exists, for how could he possibly know what in God's providential plan of history does or does not contribute to the ultimate salvation of the greatest number of people?'

There you are.

Abortion and other harms in the world today actually lead to the ultimate salvation of the greatest number of people.

So keep aborting babies.... Every abortion , and every other harm in the world today, is in 'God's providential plan of history' for the 'ultimate salvation of the greatest number of people'.

Truly Craig is a master of apologetics....

You must be kidding me.

You honestly think that "we should encourage harm" follows from "we cannot prove that any harm is indeed gratutitous"?

For your sake, I hope you never get an opportunity to debate Craig in public. Then again, given the reasoning capabilities you've demonstrated above, I doubt you have to worry about that...

Craig denies that gratuitous harm exists.

So what is wrong with abortion?

Abortion does not cause gratuitous harm, according to Craig.

Doesn't Eric want people to be saved?

According to Craig, abortion and other harms in the world today 'contribute to the ultimate salvation of the greatest number of people.'

This is Craig's logic....

Craig claims we cannot prove that abortion is not in 'God's providential plan of history'.

So how do we know abortion is wrong, when Craig denies that gratuitous harm exists?

Actually, assuming christianity to be true, and assuming that aborted fetuses go to heaven, abortion really does contribute to the ultimate salvation of the greatest number of people. Far more so than all the missionary work in the world could ever hope to.

So this probably isn't the best example for the atheist to use as evidence of gratuitous harm assuming christianity to be true.

Not that it isn't obviously problematic for christians on other grounds.....
