The census 2011 - how many people should the Christian god kill?

At the upcoming Unbelievable conference on apologetics, David Instone-Brewer will be speaking.

Here is what David Instone-Brewer has to say about taking a census, and how his god equips his angels with swords.

What does an angel need with a sword, anyway? Can't the Christian god invent laser beams, or any technology that people of 2000 years did not know about? What a puny god - limited to bronze age technology by the people who invented him.

Christian Warfare

I quote from what a grown adult in the 21st century actually believes....

“Satan rose up against Israel and incited David to take a census of Israel”
- David wanted to know how big his kingdom was, but this was evil pride
- he insisted, and God punished him by sending a plague killing 70,000 men
- David sees this as an angel with drawn sword, and fell down in repentance
- he asked God to kill himself and his family rather than any more Israelites
- the place where the angel stopped became the place for David’s Tabernacle

Of course, Mr. Instone-Brewer clean forgets to tell his readers that his imaginary god ordered this census to be taken.....

2 Samuel 24 'Again the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and he incited David against them, saying, “Go and take a census of Israel and Judah.”

"Can't the Christian god invent laser beams, or any technology that people of 2000 years did not know about?"? What a terrible argument. Simply... ouch. Of course he can. He didn't WANT TO because it would not lead to the greater good. Let's just list a few reasons this might be:

1) This insured the people got his point. David may have spent three hours asking the Angel what he was holding (a laser beam), while with a sword he knew how to respond.
2) This eliminates any risk of the weapons being ripped off. If God used a more modern weapon, how do we know the Canaanites wouldn't rip it off?
3) In that culture, it was better to die in war in combat than have the city nuked or be sniped or be annihilated with a laser beam.

"Of course, Mr. Instone-Brewer clean forgets to tell his readers that his imaginary god ordered this census to be taken....."

So? David could have inflated his ego too much with the command or have misinterpreted it or be abusing it. There are many possibilities.
